AREAS AFFECTED: Northern High Plains; Southern High Plains
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...For the Winter Weather Advisory, blowing snow with periods of snow showers through the rest of this afternoon. Additional snow accumulations up to one inch. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph. For the Winter Storm Warning, snow redeveloping tonight with periods of moderate to heavy snow expected late Friday and Saturday. Total new snow accumulations between 6 and 12 inches. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph. * WHERE...The foothills and plains adjacent to the Rocky Mountain Front. * WHEN...For the Winter Weather Advisory, until 6 PM MDT this evening. For the Winter Storm Warning, from 6 PM this evening to 6 PM MDT Saturday. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility through the rest of this afternoon.
INSTRUCTION: If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 5 1 1 or visiting the MDT Road Report website.

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless,
smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud,
because it is thicker.
Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat
of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate
before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.
