DESCRIPTION: AVAMSO The following message is transmitted at the request of Flathead Avalanche Center Hungry Horse MT. ...AVALANCHE WATCH ISSUED BY THE FLATHEAD AVALANCHE CENTER... 07:00 MDT Wed Mar 11 2026 The Flathead Avalanche Center in Hungry Horse has issued a BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WATCH for the following areas: NWS Missoula MT - MTZ001 (MTZ001)...MTZ002 (MTZ002) * WHAT...An incoming storm may create exceptionally dangerous conditions. * WHERE...The Whitefish, Swan, Flathead, and Apgar Ranges, and the Lake McDonald Valley and Marias Pass regions in Glacier National Park. * WHEN...In effect from Wed 07:00 MDT to Thu 06:00 MDT. * IMPACTS...Snow and strong winds are expected to arrive late Wednesday. If the storm develops as forecasted, danger may rise to High (Level 4 of 5) overnight. Avalanches could break in the new and wind-drifted snow. Larger and more destructive avalanches may fail on buried weak layers. The likelihood of natural and human-triggered avalanches will increase. * PRECAUTIONARY / PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...Exceptionally dangerous avalanche conditions may develop. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended. Avalanches may run long distances and can run into mature forests, valley floors, or flat terrain. The final form taken by a growing cumulus cloud is the cumulonimbus cloud, which is very tall and dense. The tower of a cumulonimbus cloud can soar 23 km into the atmosphere, although most commonly they stop growing at an altitude of 6 km.

Even small cumulonimbus clouds appear very large in comparison to other cloud types. They can signal the approach of stormy weather, such as thunderstorms or blizzards.

Drizzle is precipitation in the form of water droplets which are smaller than raindrops.

Drizzle is characterized by fine, gently falling droplets and typically does not impact human habitation in a negative way. The exception to this is freezing drizzle, a condition where drizzle freezes immediately upon reaching earth's surface. Freezing drizzle is still less dangerous than freezing rain, but can potentially result in hazardous road conditions.
